The Feeless Protocol: All Or Nothing w/ Dan Simerman

Dan Simerman - Head of Financial Relations, Iota Foundation

Blockchain protocols are designing a new world for digital engagement, and expect consumers to buy into the premise that their systems are pre-cursors to the next-generation Internet.  The reality, however, is the fundamental architecture and incentive mechanisms of these systems make them difficult to adopt at a global scale. The usability, scalability, and accessibility of 'fee-based systems' should be seriously questioned as new blockchain systems promise to change the world for businesses and consumers alike.

In this eye-opening presentation, Dan Simerman discusses an alternative vision to the fee-based, miner and staker rewards systems we've all become accustomed to, and asks investors and builders to take a critical view on the use of tokens and token based models within a decentralized ecosystem.

10:30am - 11:00am

"WTF are you doing? Blockchain isn't your business and other realizations 3 years into the hype."

Samson Williams - Principal Consultant, Axes and Eggs

In this presentation Samson Williams will break down what you think you're doing verse what you're actually doing, verses what you should be doing to create, grow and scale a sustainable business. After 3 years of hype it’s time to get over blockchain and down to business. We look forward to seeing you there.

Dapp Development Using Second Layer Solutions Instead of Smart Contracts  with Matt Rosen

Matt Rosen - Founder & CTO, Splinterlands

The majority of blockchain-based, decentralized applications, or "dApps", are developed as smart contracts published to a blockchain like Ethereum, EOS, or Tron. This comes with numerous challenges such as difficult development processes, poor user experiences, and limited flexibility. When developing the Splinterlands game (originally known as Steem Monsters) we instead chose to develop it as a second-layer protocol on top of the Steem blockchain, which made the development process significantly easier and allowed us to focus more on the product and the user experience. As a result we are one of the largest blockchain-based games with over 2,000 daily active players and one of the most active NFT marketplaces in existence. In this talk I will discuss how second layer protocols work for dApp development and the differences, advantages, and tradeoffs between them and smart contracts.
